About the village
The Church of Saint David is the parish church for Newbold-on-Stour and Armscote. Newbold-on-Stour straddles the A3400, 6 ½ miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon, and 3 ½ miles north of Shipston-on-Stour. Armscote is a hamlet 1 mile west of Newbold, with many attractive stone buildings.
The area is rural, and surrounded by farmland, although recent developments in the village have attracted commuters to large surrounding towns. The population of these villages is 750, in 227 households of which 20% live in Armscote, There are 2 public houses, a Post Office/Village Store, a War Memorial on the Village Green is over-looked by the Village Hall which was re-furbished in 2001. The infant department of the Church of England (Voluntary Controlled) School is in Newbold, the junior section being in neighbouring Tredington.
The church, like some of the surrounding houses, is stone built and dates from 1835. Originally, part of the parish of Tredington and one of the “island” parishes of Worcester, it was surrounded by Warwickshire. In 1833 The Bishop of Worcester constituted a separate ecclesiastical parish, of Newbold-on-Stour with Armscote. A church, parsonage-house and churchyard were built in 1835 and dedicated to St David. In 1933, under the re-organisation of county boundaries, Newbold was transferred to Warwickshire and the Diocese of Warwickshire. In 1713 Jesus College bought the “advowson” of Tredington, and remains the patron of the parish.
The church is light and airy, and can seat 130, it enjoys some original stained glass windows, a new window, designed by Derek Hunt, was donated and installed in 2006 to commemorate the pilgrimage of a parishioner. The small pipe organ was made by Henry Hewins of Stratford-upon Avon, and is well regarded.
There is regular and varied worship in the church, and an active community supporting fund-raising for the fabric of the church and providing support and fellowship for parishioners.
